WoW generally does not utilize pronouns of players directly

It is believed that the WoW: Dragonflight WoTLK Gold alpha and data mining have revealed the possibility of new inclusion features for the MMO. These features change and add additional steps to the creation of characters to allow more players to be able to customize their characters.

One of these inclusivity features is shown off in the current alpha release of Dragonflight. On the Character Creator, player’s options of body type are identified as “Body 1” along with “Body 2.” Prior to Dragonflight, and still in the current version of the game, these models were identified as “Male” or “Female.” People of all genders slot into many more than just two types of body, however the dissociation of gender from even these particular body types is at least the first step towards an accommodating character design. Other games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Halo Infinite have used similar words.

As noted by Wowhead, datamining strings reveal possibilities for pronoun choice options such as “she/her,” “he/him,” and “they/them.” What method the decision will be presented or if it’s put into place is still to be discovered. As the report from Wowhead notes, WoW generally does not utilize pronouns of players directly, opting for gender-neutral titles such as “hero” and “champion” to replace them. Pronouns and gender are not mentioned in the majority of user interfaces for players. However, the change would line up with a stated purpose of allowing additional possibilities for customization of characters and also the possibility for changing a player character’s voice, also an increasingly common option among creators of characters. This means that these are basic, but welcome features that can allow for more gender expression.

Blizzard has been subject to criticism over its approach to inclusion within games before, the most recently, with the release of the diversity metric tool. The developer is also still involved in a debate over worker mismanagement, as well as the sexist workplace culture. Most recently, employees of Activision Blizzard King Workers buy WOW WoTLK Classic Gold Alliance has announced a walkout in order to demand increased protections for the most marginalized employees.
